If you have a lot of studying to do, StudyProf FlashCards might be the buddy you’ve been looking for. The program, which has a free trial version available, allows you to create flashcards in a relatively simple environment. Give your card a title and an image or audio then virtually flip the card and place the information you are trying to learn on the back.

After making a set of cards you can file them in your card box and retrieve them and replay them, slideshow style with simple mouse clicks.

If you are studying something specific, StudyProf creators, Felling Software Development, has also created the Flashcard Archive to make it easier to download precreated sets of flashcards (though only the English to German flashcards are currently available).

Studying is never a lot of fun, but at least if your typing is better than your handwriting StudyProf gives you an alternative method to get the job done.

The folks over at The Register posted story about an amazing excess of packaging from HP. Apparently in an effort to send some licensing certificates, each set of two certificates was wrapped in a piece of foam, packed into a small box, and then the 16 small boxes were packed into one big box - which from the photo looks almost like two smaller boxes taped together. It’s really stunning the amount of packaging for 32 sheets of paper.

Has HP not heard of envelopes? Or better yet, email? Next time you feel the need for bubble wrap, go virtual for your popping with this online bubble wrap popping flash tool and package things a little less.

Nametrends shows you what the most popular names are, and which ones are moving up and down on the trendiness scale. Want to be original? Don’t name your son “Jayden” or your daughter “Addison.” Those are so hot right now.

The data on Nametrends is actually impressively deep. Popularity charts go back to 1880, and you can also search by geographic location and similar sounds. You can look up your own name, and check out maps that show its regional popularity over time, or even check out categories as esoteric as “gems.” Even if you don’t have anyone or anything to name, it’s a fun time waster.

Hey, we know some people really did care very much about the Mozilla world record for Firefox 3 downloads on Download Day. And hey, yeah, we’ll concede mad props to the Mozilla team for getting out there and getting those downloads.

But OpenSUSE just upped the “let’s get lots of new users” ante. Record books are all well and good, but what about stakes that are a little higher, a bit more exotic? For instance, what would happen if OpenSUSE hit a million installs of the OpenSUSE 11.0 release by the SourceForge Community Choice Awards at OSCON next week?

If OpenSUSE 11.0 hits the million registered installs mark by July 24, OpenSUSE Community Manager Joe (”Zonker”) Brockmeier is putting his skin on the line. No, really, his skin. If this lofty goal is reached, by the end of OSCON Zonker will be sporting a nifty new tattoo of the deliriously happy OpenSUSE mascot, the “geeko.”

Now, a million installs is a lot. You can’t really blame Zonker though, as a tattoo is a pretty big deal, depending not only on one’s pain tolerance, but the idea that one day you will have to explain to your grandkids why any given image is on your back (or arm… or…). We suppose he had to set the bar pretty high so that even the jaded future generations would be duly impressed. Zonker is still willing to amuse us, though, and has said that a more attainable 300,000 registered installs would get him to leave OSCON with green hair.

But c’mon, a tattoo is so much cooler. If you were thinking you’d like to try OpenSUSE 11.0, but needed just that little kickstart to try it, this is a pretty fine reason to at least give the LiveCD a whirl. If you like it enough to install it, you will have to register (no cost or spam involved) the install in order for it to count towards Zonker’s new tattoo.

And no, no word yet on prospective placement of the geeko.
