Boxing Day Time Waster: Take a walk down memory lane

Do you have Boxing Day in the States? I don’t think you do. Maybe you did back in the olden days, when you were still a colony — anyway, Boxing Day is the day after Christmas. Historically, the 26th December would be the day that tradesmen or those that delivered a service — chimney sweeps! — would stop by their masters/lords and pick up a gift, a ‘Christmas Box’.

Nowadays, it’s just an excuse to sit on the sofa, eat cold turkey sandwiches and pass a lot of wind while watching the latest Pixar movie on television. Boxing Day is, in fact, a perfect time for a Time-Waster!

Today I have a cute game that should last you at least 10 or 15 minutes, and maybe a little longer if you’re of a sappy or romantic disposition. It’s called First Love, and it’s a ‘room escape’ game of a very different variety.

For a start, you’re not in a room: you’re in a chapel, walking down an aisle.
I don’t want to give away the plot, so you’ll just have to believe me when I say it’s very cute, and very, very heart-warming. It’s the kind of game that makes you happy to be a human.

[No, I have no idea why you're collecting the Jewish Star of David in a Christian church...]

Navigation around the chapel is easy enough — click the borders to move back and forth, or turn left and right — but it can be a little tricky to turn into the church’s pews. If you love Final Fantasy-esque games, you’ll like the music that plays throughout (but you can stop it, if you like). It’s very, er, cute — as is the abundant use of Engrish (and don’t forget to select the ‘English’ option on the start menu! Unless you’re Japanese).

I should warn you that this isn’t one of the easier puzzle games — you do get a handy mouse pointer when you hover over something you can interact with though! The music kept me nicely soothed, even when things got a little irksome. Let me give you two tips though: a) there are four coloured stars and b) use the ‘hint’ when you get the box. Don’t be a fool like me and try to do it without pesky hints!

Play First Love!
